Gas Requirements for Gas Generators

To ensure the stable and efficient operation of gas generators, specific gas quality requirements must be met. Below are the detailed requirements for different types of gases used in gas generator sets.

1. Natural Gas Requirements

The natural gas supplied to the generator should meet the following conditions at a point 1 meter before the gas inlet pressure regulator:
Pressure: 100–300 kPa (for turbocharged engines) or 50–300 kPa (for non-turbocharged engines)
Methane (CH₄) Content: ≥70% (by volume)
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Content: ≤20 mg/Nm³
Impurity Size: <5 μm, with total impurity content ≤30 mg/Nm³

Effects of High Sulfur and Ammonia Content:
Excessive sulfur and ammonia can severely corrode spark plug electrodes, increase the acidity of engine oil, damage internal engine components, and lead to deposits that accelerate wear and corrosion.

2. Biogas Requirements

The biogas supplied to the generator should meet the following conditions at a point 1 meter before the gas inlet pressure regulator:
Temperature: ≤40°C
Pressure: 3–10 kPa, with a pressure fluctuation rate ≤1 kPa/min
Methane (CH₄) Content: ≥40% (by volume), with a fluctuation rate ≤2%/min
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Content: ≤200 mg/Nm³
Ammonia (NH₃) Content: ≤20 mg/Nm³
Impurity Size: ≤5 μm, with total impurity content ≤30 mg/Nm³
Moisture Content: ≤40 g/Nm³

Special Note: If the methane content is between 30-40%, the generator requires special configuration or a different model selection.

3. Coal Mine Gas (Methane Gas) Requirements

The coal mine gas supplied to the generator should meet the following conditions at a point 1 meter before the gas inlet pressure regulator:
Temperature: ≤40°C
Pressure: 3–10 kPa, with a pressure fluctuation rate ≤1 kPa/min
Methane (CH₄) Content: ≥9% (by volume), with a fluctuation rate ≤2%/min
For methane content <30%, the sum of methane and oxygen content should be ≥28%, with oxygen content no less than 16%
Impurity Size: ≤5 μm, with total impurity content ≤30 mg/Nm³
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Content: ≤200 mg/Nm³

Gas outside these specifications should be evaluated for feasibility with the manufacturer.

4. Coke Oven Gas Requirements

The coke oven gas supplied to the generator should meet the following conditions at a point 1 meter before the gas inlet pressure regulator:
Temperature: ≤40°C
Pressure: 3–10 kPa, with a pressure fluctuation rate ≤1 kPa/min
Hydrogen (H₂) Content: ≤60% (by volume)
Hydrogen Sulfide (H₂S) Content: ≤200 mg/Nm³
Ammonia (NH₃) Content: ≤20 mg/Nm³
Tar Content: ≤50 mg/Nm³
Impurity Size: ≤5 μm, with total impurity content ≤30 mg/Nm³
Moisture Content: ≤40 g/Nm³

Conclusion

Ensuring gas quality within the specified limits is crucial for the performance and longevity of gas generators. High sulfur and ammonia levels can corrode components, increase engine wear, and cause operational failures. If the supplied gas does not meet these specifications, proper treatment or consultation with the manufacturer is recommended before use.
